About Us
Howzit sports fans. Remember me? Been a while hasn’t it? Well, here we are again!!!
For the uninitiated, www.grootkak.com is the old home of the Wang Gang Gang Motorcycle Club. The Wang Gang Gang, and subsequently www.grootkak.com, were active from approximately 1999 to the end of 2006. The web site was created as a means for a bunch of regular riding mates to share photographs of each weekend’s ride. As time passed, the popularity of both the web site and the riding with a bunch of lunatics grew and the Wang Gang Gang was formed. At it’s peak, there were 120 members in Johannesburg, 25 in Cape Town, 15 in Durban, 35 in Colorado USA, and a couple in Canada, Mexico, and Australia. The site had over 15000 photos of rides specifically from Johannesburg and Colorado, and a bunch of both humorous and useful dirt bike related information. A lot of time and energy over the years went into the updating and maintenance of the site, and as it and the Wang Gang Gang grew, so the upkeep time and visitor usage escalated. When a point was reached the time wasn’t fun anymore and the visitor usage volume was starting to create a situation where real money was needed every month to keep it going, a decision was made to can the whole thing – and so it was.
Since then, there have been numerous requests for information that used to be on the site and for the site itself to be reactivated. So, what’s been done is we have re-launched www.grootkak.com. The Wang Gang Gang will always be a fond memory but that is not being resurrected. We will put up a link to the entire original grootkak site for those that might like to reminisce, but as we move forward we will be allowing a much simpler method of ride report and photo sharing through more current technologies like photobucket and youtube instead of yours truly having to do all the updates himself.
So, now that the then and now has been explained, lets move on to current stuff. I am now a partner in a company called MuddX which dedicated to marketing extreme sports with an obvious initial emphasis on dirt biking. Besides a host of events and activities, one of the things that gets huge traction is my monthly Newbie ride, more formally known as an Introduction to Outrides and De Wildt. If you are new to the sport and live in the Gauteng or North West areas, I run one of these events once a month and have been doing so since February 2007. They are geared for the rooky in the sport and are extremely popular. If you are interested, give me a shout at steve.lauter@iafrica.com.
Also, for those that remember the old grootkak days, you will remember that I had a rental bike available for outrides. Well….. I have one again, a 2001 KTM 200 EXC available for rental on rides with me for R750 including the first tank of fuel. You can contact me on the same e-mail address if this interests you.
Besides MuddX and bike rentals, I am still religiously addicted to dirt biking. My current weopon of choice, a 2008 KTM 300 XC-W. You can catch me in the dirt every Saturday, 9 out of 10 times at De Wildt, starting at the Morula Sun Hotel.
Looking forward to seeing you out there.
Keep the shiny side up and ride it like you stole it.
Steve “Tombstone” Lauter
